Introduction

JR Tokai Agency (JTA), the premier advertising agency of the JR Central Group, manages public communications and transit media across one of Japan’s most critical railway networks. Known for its forward-thinking marketing strategies, JTA continuously seeks innovations that streamline operations while minimizing carbon footprint. In an era marked by labor constraints and a rising demand for digitalization, JTA focuses heavily on transforming traditional environments with eco-friendly infrastructure. To drive this evolution, JTA partnered with E Ink and AUO Display Plus (ADP) to deploy a next-generation signage ecosystem at Tokyo Station.

“Color ePaper signage empowers us to transition transit advertising into the digital era seamlessly, increasing labor efficiency and advancing our net-zero sustainability goals.” Naoki Sumita, President of E Ink Japan

Key Points

    • Eco-friendly paperless advertising

    • Unplugged setup without complex wiring

    • Advanced AUO Display Plus’s AecoColor+ color algorithm

    • Low power consumption for reduced emissions

Challenge

Tokyo Station operates as one of Japan’s busiest transit mega-hubs, creating a high-traffic environment with highly flexible and time-sensitive advertising demands. Traditionally, managing paper signboards required significant manual labor for printing, physical distribution, and routine replacement. This approach created substantial paper waste and limited campaign flexibility. In addition, introducing traditional digital displays (like LCD or LED) was restricted by the strict infrastructure guidelines of a busy railway station, where installing heavy power lines and cables poses complex engineering challenges. JTA needed an eco-friendly digital solution that could eliminate printing waste and deploy without heavy physical construction.

Solution

JTA has launched a pilot deployment of full-color ePaper signage, selecting AUO Display Plus's 31.5-inch AecoPost full-color ePaper display as a key solution to revolutionize its transit signage. Powered by advanced ePaper technology, the AecoPost provides a zero-emission, battery-powered platform specifically optimized for public transit. JTA strategically positioned the 31.5-inch AecoPost ePaper signage units across prime high-traffic advertising points: at the busy Yaesu South Exit and the prominent Nihonbashi Exit. This proof-of-concept project establishes the viability of color ePaper signage in a high-density, real-world transportation hub.

Unplugged and Rapid Deployment directly Replaces Traditional Paper

Thanks to the AecoPost's lightweight, unplugged design, JTA can install the signage instantly on existing walls and structures. Because the displays run entirely on a built-in battery, they require no wall drilling or complex power grid modifications. This allows JTA to directly replace traditional paper signboards without interrupting daily train operations, instantly upgrading existing poster locations into smart digital media points.

AUO Display Plus’s AecoColor+ Algorithm Delivers Striking Visual Communication

Utilizing AUO Display Plus's proprietary AecoColor+ color algorithm alongside E Ink Spectra 6™ technology, the AecoPost enhances brightness and contrast to deliver optimized color performance. The display reflects ambient light to create a glare-free, paper-like viewing experience that looks like a high-quality print. This ensures commercial ads remain striking, legible, and visually comfortable under the bright, varied lighting of Tokyo Station.

Streamlined Content Updates Designed to Reduce Maintenance Labor

AecoPost is designed to support remote digital content updates, aiming to eliminate the repetitive labor and workflows of physical paper replacement. In the future, by pairing the solution with a cloud management platform, operators will be able to directly push real-time digital advertising updates anywhere, providing dynamic support for agile, time-sensitive campaigns.

Result

The pilot deployment at Tokyo Station showcases a seamless integration of digital innovation and eco-friendly infrastructure. By choosing AUO Display Plus's AecoPost solution, JTA solved critical operational challenges related to staff shortages and complex station wiring. The integration established that color ePaper displays can thrive in high-traffic transportation environments while providing significant savings in labor, time, and materials. Moving forward, JTA plans to expand its green digital transformation by accelerating consideration of deploying energy-efficient ePaper signage across the wider JR Tokai station network.
